NASK National Research Institute – at the Forefront of Cybersecurity and AI Research
NASK conducts research and development work in computer science, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and distributed networks. As the institution that connected Poland to the Internet in 1991, we believe that the development of these disciplines is the future of science, the economy, and society at large. The work carried out by the NASK research teams makes it possible to create world-class new technologies responsibly.
Understanding the nature of artificial intelligence is one of the grand challenges of our times. This challenge is at the core of our research on the mathematical foundations of machine learning. We engineer learning algorithms and develop data representations supporting AI interpretability, explainability, and trustworthiness. We design experiments and methods to unpack black boxes, including generative AI and large language models (LLMs). We care about ethics, evolution, and security of AI.
NASK is home to several exciting research projects. VARIoT (Vulnerability and Attack Repository for IoT) addresses essential problems of Internet of Things device security, aiming to create a service that collects information on vulnerabilities and exploits. In Optokrypt and Pionier-Q projects we develop Quantum Key Distribution solutions that can secure sensitive communications in the country and in Europe. We are a part of the research consortium that works on the Polish Large Language Model (PLLuM) – making sure it is built on the pillars of responsible AI. Another project called APAKT aims to develop algorithms that aid in moderating online content by quickly and effectively classifying harmful materials. This functionality supports moderators analyzing reported suspicious content in their daily work. In BD4DD, we work on detailed analysis of audiovisual deepfakes, developing advanced tools and methodologies for recognizing facial manipulation, analyzing synthetic voices, and detecting artifacts using machine learning, deep networks, and biometrics techniques.
NASK has significant experience implementing machine learning algorithms in practice. Our BotSense system detects real-time attempts to take over accounts and unauthorized financial transactions caused by malware that has infected the computers of e-banking service users. Through the Open Educational Network (OSE), we provide 90% of schools in Poland with secure Internet access. We detect and block malware and computer viruses in the network, protect it against network attacks, and eliminate access to illegal or potentially dangerous content.
NASK research activities reach beyond our R&D centre, with several of its departments relying heavily on machine learning expertise. CERT Polska is historically the first incident response team in Poland, responsible for handling security incidents and cooperating with similar units worldwide. Dyżurnet.pl is a team of experts acting as a contact point for reporting illegal content on the Internet, primarily related to child sexual abuse. Center for Countering Disinformation aims to address threats to the security of public and strategic communication, identifying the sources of disinformation and preventing their impact.
Over 100 people are involved in scientific activities at NASK, including PhD students of the Doctoral School of Information and Biomedical Technologies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (TIB PAN), which was co-founded by the Institute. We employ enthusiasts who are willing to shape the world by developing technology that serves society.
